Technical Director of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Terrence Poole, became Guyana’s first three-star coach after successfully sitting an International Boxing Association (AIBA) exam last October while at the World Boxing Championships in Kazakhstan.
During Tuesday’s press briefing held by the GBA at the Ministry of Sport,
the former pugilist exhibited the certificate which he recently received, confirming his status as Guyana’s highest qualified coach in the fistic sport.
Poole told media operatives that the certificate is his greatest achievement to date and he will use his knowledge to coach future champions and Olympians.
“This piece of document is so important to me, my family and the entire boxing fraternity” Poole said. “As a boxer I was not fortunate to reach the pinnacle, I subsequently turned to coaching and this is the pinnacle in coaching at present. Three-star is the highest level of coaching by AIBA.”
Poole added “The only way this certificate could show that I achieved the fullest, I must be able to have someone qualifying for the next Olympics or even going on and winning a medal. The certificate is just paper but this now is production, I need to have someone qualify by any means for the coming Olympics which is in 2016.”
GBA head, Steve Ninvalle, congratulated Poole for his historic achievement stating that the GBA is “extremely proud and extremely happy that Mr. Poole could had gone and done Guyana well by being successful at the examination.
Ninvalle also thanked Permanent Secretary of the Sport Ministry, Alfred King who was instrumental in making Poole’s sojourn a success.
Poole meanwhile extended gratitude to Mark Phillips of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), former Army Chief of Staff, Rear Admiral, Gary Best and the GBA for making his achievement possible.
