Two men, one accused of stealing and the other of receiving the stolen items, on Thursday appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Colin Alleyne, also known as Colin Williams, was charged with two counts of breaking and entering and larceny. It is alleged that between November 26 and November 27, 2013 at Hyde Park, Timehri, he broke and entered a home and stole 1 LG flat screen television valued $120,000 and 1 DVD player valued $13,000. He was not required to plead.
It is also alleged that the defendant, broke and entered the same home and stole one circle saw valued $75,000 and one blue electrical plate valued $65,000, property of Premnauth Munilall. Alleyne was also not required to plead to this charge.
Prosecutor Renetta Bentham objected to bail based on the fact that the defendant had given two different addresses along with differing occupations. These grounds, Bentham continued, hinted at the defendant being a possible flight risk. She added that Alleyne had confessed to stealing the items.
Alleyne was remanded to prison.
Nigel Gomes was charged with receiving the stolen circle saw and electrical plate, a total value of $140,000, from Alleyne between November 26 and November 27, 2013 at Land of Canaan. It is alleged that Gomes had knowledge that the items were stolen property.
However, Gomes’ lawyer Paul Fung-a-Fat refuted these claims. According to Fung-a-Fat the items belonged to his client and there were receipts in his possession to prove it.
Prosecutor Bentham objected to bail based on the seriousness and prevalence of the offence. Bentham also noted that Alleyne had been the one to identify Gomes’ home to the police. Fung-a-Fat, however, said that the words of an alleged thief should not be trusted.
The 48-year-old father of seven was granted $75,000 bail and is set to return to the Providence Magistrate’s Court on April 1 along with Alleyne.
