A woman who intervened in a stick-up found herself in the victim’s place as she was then robbed, the court heard yesterday.
It was the police’s case that on December 31, 2013, together with another person, Marvin Liverpool and Timothy Griffith robbed and assaulted Candace Butler in front of a city hotel. They allegedly escaped with a purse valued $700, which contained $35,000.
Butler told the court presided over by Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty that she was conducting her business when she saw Liverpool in the process of holding up a man. She said she begged him to let the man be and he turned his attention to her, snatched her purse, dealt her a cuff to her face, then threatened to kill her. She expressed concern for her safety. “I frighten he… I got a child and I got to look for me money,” Butler declared.
Liverpool pleaded guilty and offered an explanation, while Griffith pleaded not guilty.
Liverpool, 37, denied stealing from the woman. The father of five, who resides at D’Urban Backlands, told the court that he was on his way home at 1 am on January 1, 2014, when the incident occurred. Liverpool said he had met up with two friends and sometime later, he saw Butler. He said Butler asked him where he was going and sometime during the exchange of words between them, he alleged, she held on to him and pull an ice pick on him, so he slapped her. “I get vex and I sorry I knock she,” exclaimed Liverpool. Magistrate Mc Gusty changed his plea to not guilty and denied him bail.
Meanwhile, Griffith, 23, of Lot 184 ‘C’ Field South Sophia, denied the allegation of robbery. He was placed on $75,000 bail.
Both men will return to court on January 23.
