Normal traffic has resumed on the Demerara Harbour Bridge following a mishap this morning that left commuters stranded for hours.
A fuel vessel travelling south along the Demerara River slammed into the Bridge around 05:00 hrs today while it was open to allow vessels to pass. The damage done to the structure paralyzed its ability to close and so there was a massive traffic jam on both sides of the river as vehicles attempting to cross the bridge were stuck for several hours. Stabroek News understands that the bridge’s maintenance crew was alerted and went to work trying to fix the damage that was done.
They were able to make the bridge operational again by 09:00 hrs, by which time many commuters had opted to cross the river by way of the speed boats which traverse the Vreed-en-Hoop-Georgetown stellings.
