A first-time Canadian visitor to Guyana was remanded to prison over the possession of almost 21 pounds of cocaine after he was allegedly busted at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) early yesterday morning.
Edward Jones, a Canadian, pleaded not guilty when the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court today.
According to reports, the illicit substance was found in the false bottoms of Jones’ two suitcases. The man’s lawyer Marcel Bobb made a bail application stating that the defendant suffered from heart problems.
However, Prosecutor Bharat Mangru objected to bail, stating that the reason given by the defence is not a special reason.
Jones’ matter will be heard again on Monday at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
