All-rounder Christopher Barnwell was yesterday named skipper of the Guyana team and veteran West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul will be his deputy for the upcoming Nagico Super 50 2014 set to start on January 30 in Trinidad and Tobago.
Barnwell, who represented the West Indies in 6 T20 internationals has been in cracking form throughout 2013 and opened his 2014 account with a fluent half-century a few days ago in the team’s first practice match.
Chanderpaul, the West Indies’ most-capped Test player and the current world ranked number 2 Test batsman on the ICC list will use his vast experience and knowledge to assist Barnwell in the tournament.
The squad features the experience of West Indies ‘A’ left-handers Leon Johnson and Assad Fudadin, current West Indies middle-order batsman Narsingh Deonarine, former West Indies skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan, ex West Indies all-rounder Royston Crandon and wicket-keeper/batsman Anthony Bramble while the new kid on the block is opener Robin Bacchus who has been rapidly improving his cricket since his debut for Guyana against Trinidad during their T20 competition last year. Young aggressive opener Trevon Griffith was also named in the squad, along with bowlers Veerasammy Permaul, Devendra Bishoo, Ronsford Beaton and Paul Wintz.
Meanwhile, the entire training squad of 26 players including fast-bowler Andre Stoll and the pugnacious Jonathan Foo will remain encamped until January 25.
