The streets of Albouys-town remained covered in over six inches of water yesterday even as floodwaters receded around the rest of the city a day after incessant rainfall.
The water had receded in West Ruimveldt, South Road, Regent Road and Cemetery Road even though rainfall continued throughout yesterday following Tuesday’s heavy downpours.
One resident of Gilhuys Square, West Ruimveldt, Tiffany Adams related that the floodwater
had started to recede around 6pm on Tuesday.
But residents in Albouystown continued to dwell in floodwaters as most of their drains and streets were submerged. Joel Lewis, the owner of a computer and television repair shop, said that there was four inches of water in his shop on Tuesday.
“A lot of stuff damaged and it ain’t my stuff. When I come to check the shop them things were floating in water so I put them outside in the sun to dry out but the rain come again and wet it up…where I gon find the money to pay these people for their stuff?” said a frustrated Lewis.
He lamented that the last flood in November left him in debt. “I had to pay out over $100,000 in debt to people whose stuff got ruined because they left it with me.”
Another resident, Randolph Thorn, said that water from the cemetery was seeping into Albouystown and people were scared of an outbreak of diseases. “Yesterday [Tuesday] was bad but today the water started to dry up but then later this afternoon it start to swell up again,” he said, adding that children had to walk through floodwaters to go to their schools.
