A 59-year-old motorcyclist of Waterloo, Bath, West Coast Berbice lost his life after he was struck by a Toyota Caldina wagon, HC 1217 around 5:50 pm yesterday on the Bath Settlement public road.
The man, Khemraj ‘Suresh’ Ramdeo, a mechanic at the Blairmont Sugar Estate was pronounced dead on arrival at the Fort Wellington Hospital.
Medical personnel said the man suffered severe head injuries, a complete fracture to the left foot above
the ankle and a fracture below the right knee. He was also said to be bleeding through his nose.
An eyewitness said Ramdeo, who was consuming alcohol earlier, went to purchase a cigarette at another shop and started smoking it. He then rode the motorcycle, CC4941 across the road without looking, resulting in the collision.
Reports are that the driver swerved but could not avoid hitting him.
The eyewitness said that on impact Ramdeo was flung into the air and landed behind the car which kept moving slowly.
He said too that the road was wet at the time.
His wife, Lynette Ramdeo said he would normally join the estate truck to go to work most of the time but yesterday he went with the motorcycle. She assumed that on his way back he stopped at the shop to have a drink.
In tears, she recalled that around 6 pm she received a call that he had been involved in an accident. When she got to the hospital she learnt that he had died.
The couple share four children; ages 18,19, 20 and 23 from their union.
