Dear Editor,
I am writing this letter because I believe that every Guyanese should be as mad as I am about the incident of the police allegedly sodomizing a man (Colwyn Harding) with a baton.
Firstly, the police have been committing many atrocities and taking matters into their own hands without regard for the law. This has been very pervasive under the PPP government. If, we are to move forward as a civilized democratic society, there has to be the utmost regard for human life. Secondly, this poor boy is a brother, son, friend, nephew, cousin, etc. The police should not get away with this and people’s activism is necessary at this time. Thirdly, if we allow this incident to go the next victim may be someone else’s sister, brother, mother, father, or best friend.
Every Guyanese must be outraged because for too long too many incidents like this have been swept under the rug at Eve Leary. When will dignity be restored in Guyana?
The President and Commissioner of Police should man up. It is time for change. With the use of social media this will be circulating all over the world. It has begun. These guys are the leaders and so should stand up for what is right and not make this a political issue. It is a human one. And the world is watching.
Yours faithfully,
Steve Hemraj
