Secretary of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) Anil Beharry says 2014 will see the continued expansion of cricket across the ancient county.
Speaking with Stabroek Sport yesterday, Beharry said while Berbice had a very good 2013 he expects that they will surpass past achievements this year. He also said the new international lights the Albion club has received will aid their success in the 2014 Independence T20 Cup. The historic Albion ground has always been a mecca for cricket and the new lights will afford them the opportunity to host day/night fixtures using the international lighting system, instead of the artificial lights previously utilised.
Beharry also revealed that several programmes are on the BCB’s 2014 card, including workshops headed by former West Indies players and a coaching programme which will target the junior players across the county. In addition, the BCB will also resume its New Building Society Second Division tournament while efforts are being made to culminate the 2013 finals of the said competition between finalists Young Warriors and NO# 71 team at the NO# 69 Vikings ground.
Speaking about other venues in Berbice, Beharry said that while the weather has prohibited play, most of the grounds have superb drainage systems and can therefore be easily prepared for matches if needed. The ancient county recaptured the Senior Inter-county four-day title in December, which he credited to the efforts of the players whose goal was to ensure that the title returned to Berbice.
The BCB secretary also lauded the efforts of the players who earned selection to the upcoming regional tournaments and thanked the sponsors for their support at those matches.
The BCB will be celebrating its 75th anniversary in September with a number of activities throughout that month.
