The Annual Lennie Shuffler birthday volleyball festival for third division teams across Guyana is set to spike off on February 9 from 9am at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.
The Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) executives are putting in all the groundwork to ensure this year’s event held in honour of its president is an exciting, successful and memorable one.
According to a press release from the GVF, the festival is open to all existing and emerging third division teams and will feature both male and female participants.
An exhibition match between the reigning volleyball champs of Region 4 and the fast rising Guyana Defence Force (GDF) team will also be held.
The festival, celebrating Shuffler’s birth anniversary, was first held in 2010 and it is now in its fourth year.
This initiative highlights Shuffler’s unwavering dedication to the sport and his sportsmanship stated the release.
Over the years the festival has attracted participants from other sporting disciplines such as hockey players who also performed admirably, and were well received. The same approach will be taken this year.
Shuffler has been involved in the sport for some 62 years since he was introduced to the game at the tender age of 13. He was first a national player before being appointed national captain.
He later stopped playing competitively to become an administrator.
Now serving as the orgainsation’s president for his third and final term, Shuffler will soon be passing on the mantle to his successor.
Players and persons interested in participating in the festival are asked to contact the coordinators John Flores and Ronald Smith on telephone numbers 623-2030 and 684-5885 respectively to get registered.
