Grove Hi-Tech won the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport/East Bank Football Association (EDFA) knockout tournament after they defeated Kuru-Kuru Warriors 3-1 in the final at the Grove Community Centre ground on Sunday.
Orson Francois opened the scoring for the home side with a sixth minute strike to the back of the net. Grove would double their lead nine minutes later as Captain Domini Garnett added his name to the scorer’s sheet.
Collin Lewis would pull one back for the visitors through a 35th minute conversion as the half eventually ended with the score 2-1.
Resuming in the second period, Garnett would complete his double in the 68th minute to seal the win and claim the championship trophy for the hosts. Kuru-Kuru Warriors for their efforts collected the second place accolade.
Kuru-Kuru Warriors coach, Dillion Roberts during an invited comment said:“In my view it was a great challenge. We played a team that has been playing for eight months and we haven’t been playing a lot.
“Reaching the final was a surprise but it was a great achievement for a team that has been playing competitive football in a while,” said Roberts.
In the earlier fourth place matchup, Diamond United squeaked past Soesdyke Falcons by a 1-0 score line. Eric Williams netted the fixture only success compliments of a 20th minute conversion.
In the presentation that followed the conclusion of the respective fixtures, Grove’s Garnett was adjudged to the event’s most valuable player while Michael Matthews was recipient of the best goalkeeper award.
Timehri Panthers due to their defeat in the semifinal round was automatically awarded the third placed position after three teams made it to the semi-final round.
Prior to the commencement of the fixtures, Guyana Football Federation (GFF) President Christopher Matthias delivered the opening remarks to the players and spectators.
