A woman was fined and placed on bail yesterday after answering three charges in a Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, including throwing bricks at her neighbours.
Fifty-eight year old Indra Persaud of 39 Sideline Dam, Middle Road, La Penitence, pleaded guilty to one of the charges and not guilty to the other two when they were read to her by Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond.
Persaud admitted that she, on January 20, at Middle Road, La Penitence, threw bricks to the annoyance of Shamdal Ramlall. It was also alleged that Persaud on the same date and at the same location made use of threatening language towards Ramlall and also threw bricks to the annoyance of Hazel Thomas.
According to Prosecutor Jomo Nichols, the defendant and both of the plaintiffs are neighbours. He said that on the day in question, the three had a misunderstanding, during which Persaud allegedly abused the complainants with unkind words. She then proceeded to throw bricks at them.
Persaud explained to the court that her neighbours would normally verbally abuse her and would sometimes throw things into her home. She said that, in frustration, she threw two bricks at Ramlall’s fence.
When asked by Magistrate Chandan-Edmond why she had never made a report to a police station, Persaud exclaimed that she would attempt to but to no avail. The officers, she allege, would receive calls from persons who would claim that her “head ain’t good.”
Recounting the January 20 incident, Persaud said that after she had thrown the bricks at Ramlall’s fence, her other neighbour Thomas came out and began to curse her, despite not being the subject of Persaud’s anger.
The mother of three was fined $10,000 or 20 days imprisonment for throwing bricks at Ramlall’s fence, while she was granted bail in the sum of $10,000 in relation to the two other charges. She is set to return to court on January 28.
