The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) distributed nine hampers to the relatives of persons who perished in boat accidents last year, even as it continues its nationwide safety promotion to help to stem these incidents.
Earlier this month the agency gave hampers to June Moses, wife of 33-year-old Deon Moses who was one of seven persons who died in a collision on the Mazaruni River in January 2013. Hampers were also given to Shawn Seeram, son of the late Jewan Seeram,52; Joan Yearwood, the mother of the late Kevon Ambrose, 25; Swarswati Charran, wife of the late Zahir Baksh, 34; Carlton Amsterdam, father of the late Keanu Amsterdam, 17 and Penelope Grimes, wife of the late Ulric Grimes, 39, at a brief ceremony held at the MARAD head office.
Hampers were also given to Dawn Glasgow, the mother of the late Adrian Glasgow, 24, who died in a collision on the Essequibo River in September; relatives of the late Captain Dale Duggin, 28, who died in a collision on the Demerara River in November, and Peggy Williams, who received the donation on behalf of relatives of the late Donna Rampersaud who perished in an accident on the Essequibo River in November.
Seventeen persons died in boat accidents last year. In an effort to curb this trend MARAD has embarked on a countrywide safety campaign and has distributed a number of life jackets across the regions.
