An all-round display of cricket from the Rest XI yesterday led them to a 32-run upset win over the National XI in their fourth practice game of the training camp played under lights at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
Batting first, Sewnarine Chattergoon (55) carved three fours in his knock while Vishal `Cheesy’ Singh (49) and top scorer Rajendra Chandrika (62) spurred the Rest XI to 250 for 6 from 50 overs.
National skipper Christopher Barnwell (4-44) was the pick of the bowlers while West Indies Test bowler Veerasammy Permaul (1-55) and Royston Crandon (1-41) were the other wicket takers.
In reply, the National side folded for 218 all out in 47.2 overs despite a crafty 77 off 121 balls from West Indies Test batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul. Robin Bacchus (26), Crandon (25) and West Indies middle-order batsman Narsingh Deonarine, who recently returned from New Zealand and scored 21, were the other contributors of note.
Fast bowler Keon Joseph (3-27) and spinner Amir Khan (3-37) did the damage to the national side. Earlier, Chandrika and Chattergoon added 82 for the second wicket while Singh played an attractive innings but was then bowled by Barnwell falling one short of his 50.
Jonathan Foo hit 22 of 19 balls and Khan 18 off 11 ensured the Rest Team reach a decent total. The National XI got off to a slow start bringing up their 50 in 15 overs as opener Assad Fudadin scored 8 from 25 before he was eventually removed by his fellow Berbician Joseph.
Chanderpaul in his innings hit five fours and a six off spinner Shaquille William’s free-hit delivery bringing up his 50 in decent time. He then motored on with the likes of Deonarine and Crandon but after the dismissal of his teammates, the batting stalwart fell to the bowling of Khan.
His removal triggered a lower order collapse resulting in the National Team falling short of their target with overs remaining. The next game is set for Friday at 13:30hrs at the same venue.
