Dear Editor,
On Tuesday, March 19, 2013 an episode of ‘Time Out,’ done by Bibi Narine entertained some respectful views on power. It was quite interesting as she drew clips of persons expressing their concepts of power. Notable was the gracious thought of displaying power as an act of goodness or appropriate service. Those are most commendable for the demonstration of power between the sexes.
A kind word, a thoughtful action of caring is a very wonderful and effective way of revealing the power one possesses. This might and can be challenging at times, because it is different from the norm.
The popular view of power as defined in one dictionary portrays the elements of control and authority. When it comes to human relationships, to implement control by the imposition of authority is cruel and self-destructive. Kind words turn away wrath and encourage co-operation. Normally, the behaviours that usually cause animosity are the attempts at subjugation. Each of us needs to be served. But the manner in which that service is required or requested should be done with the other person’s welfare at heart. Mr Hicks in that ‘Time Out’ episode pondered as to what can be proposed as a solution to the seeming gender power. The question was asked, “Are we to replace male gender power, with female gender power? In contemplating the view, the hostess addressed the widespread female opinion that some men seemed challenged by the progress of women in several areas. The positions which are at times labelled powerful must be gender mutual. We need more co-operation between and among the sexes.
We need tons of it for the development and bonding of our lives, communities and country. Let us make some bold efforts to lessen all forms of bias.
I implore the militant feminist and the male chauvinist to please pause a while. We need their zeal and energy. They should please channel it into the unification of the sexes. Together we can surmount all different issues real or imaginary. Making this their goal and a reality can be their greatest contribution to society.
Yours faithfully,
Charles L Solomon
