Slingerz FC captain and talisman Dwain Jacobs has re-signed with national rivals Alpha ‘the Hammer’ United in what is to date the biggest move in the current transfer window in the football calendar.
In an exclusive telephone interview with Stabroek Sport, the Georgetown-bound utility man said he wanted to test the waters outside of his home team and he is now ready to return to the fold.
“I just wanted to explore to see what I could have achieved outside in terms of silverware and now I am back home. I won everything with Alpha and I wanted to see if I got a different team, if I can win. I wanted to test the waters and succeed,” he said.
Jacobs who has amassed about 20 international caps said, “I feel comfortable with the team (Slingerz) but I decided to come back home. Alpha is the team that put me on the map and due to Alpha playing in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) in March, I come home to give them that extra boost.”
Questioned if the management of the West Demerara giants tried to convince him to stay, Jacobs said despite their efforts, he chose Alpha. “They tried but I choose Alpha. Really my heart is with Alpha. It was really emotional playing against them but because I was with another team I had to give them my all,” he said. Asked about the reactions of his now former teammates upon hearing of his return to their rivals, Jacobs said he only has feelings of goodwill toward them.
“Everybody to their own order. I never regret being with Buxton United or Slingerz. Slingerz showed me more love than Buxton but this is my decision,” he said. “I wish them all the success in the future and hope they continue being a good team and keep the love and unity they had when I was there. I wish all the players all the success and hope that they do what is right and necessary to help the club.”
Questioned if a return to the Vergenoegen side in the future is possible, Jacobs said he wasn’t sure but he plans to end his career with his home team the Golden Stars. He also noted that the Alpha management was happy about his return. “They welcomed me back with open arms knowing the fact that I did great for the club in the past.”
Jacobs led Slingerz to their inaugural national title when they defeated Santos by a 3-2 score line in the recently concluded Georgetown Football Association (GFA)/Banks Beer Cup.
