The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) and the National Communications Network (NCN) on Tuesday confirmed their partnership for the sixth consecutive launching of the NCN Inter-Zone Under-15 cricket tournament.
At a ceremony held in the NCN studio, Homestretch Avenue, NCN Assistant Sport Editor Alethea Grant-Charles presented a sponsorship cheque valued $211,000 to BCB Secretary Angela Haniff.
NCN’s acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Michael Gordon said the operations of the BCB are a good example of the administration of the game in Guyana, which has impressed the company and prompted it to offer additional support.
“The National Communications Network has observed the degree of management and administration executed by the BCB – in fact we here at NCN believe that in the context of Guyana, in the local context, BCB shines as an example perhaps as the bastion of the administration of the game in Guyana,” Gordon said.
He also disclosed that NCN “considers itself a good corporate citizen” and is involved in a number of activities, especially sports, which help youths channel their energy in positive directions.
“We have a social obligation to give back to society and events, such as sports, contribute to the positive development of our young people,” he said. “Therefore we at NCN are more than honoured to be associated with events of the BCB.”
BCB Special Events Committee Chairman and club CEO Hilbert Foster said he was pleased that NCN is once again the official sponsor of the tournament. He expressed gratitude to the management and staff of the entity for investing in Berbice cricket and hoped that the relationship between the two organisations would be long and successful.
The tournament will feature players born on or after September 1, 1999. It will involve the best Under-15 players in Berbice playing for Upper Corentyne, Lower Corentyne, New Amsterdam/Canje and West Berbice. West Berbice will play New Amsterdam/Canje at the Cumberland ground while Lower Corentyne will clash with Upper Corentyne at the Area H ground.
Matches will be played over two days and the top two teams will contend with each other in the finals at a venue to be announced. The winner will collect $60,000 and a trophy. The other teams will also receive monetary prizes.
