In excess of $10M was handed over to the 32 competing teams of the GFA/Banks Beer Tournament which concluded on New Year’s Day when the official presentation ceremony was held last night at the Banks DIH Limited Sports Club, Thirst Park.
Winners of the tournament, Slingerz FC which defeated Santos FC 3-2 in the action packed final at the Providence National Stadium pocketed $4M, the league trophy and the Champions trophy.
Santos FC took home $2.5M, medals and the first runner up trophy. The third and fourth placed teams Western Tigers and GDF earned $1.5M and $1M respectively.
Alpha United, Dem Amstel FC, Camptown FC and BV/Triumph took home $250,000 apiece for finishing in the final eight.
For clinching round of 16 berths, Pele, Buxton United, Northern Rangers, NetRockers, Milerock, Mahaica FC, Monedderlust and Winners Connection were awarded $150,000 apiece. The other competing teams each pocketed $100,000.
Santos’ Dwayne Bobb was named Coach of the tournament while Christophe Wensley was adjudged MVP. He received a trophy and a ticket compliments of Fly Jamaica.
Hubert Pedro of Western Tigers was the tournament’s leading goal getter, scoring six times. Ronson Williams of Slingerz FC took home the Best Goalkeeper trophy.
Before the presentation of the hardware, brief congratulatory speeches were made to the competing teams especially to the finalists by president of the GFA, Vernon Burnett, and president of the GFF, Christopher Matthias and Banks DIH’s Troy Peters. (Emmerson Campbell)
