Sharmain Lewis, the pillion rider in Saturday morning’s accident on Regent Street, which took the life of her friend, will undergo surgery this week for the broken knee she sustained.
The accident that occurred at approximately 2 am on Saturday claimed the life of Sherwin Fraser, who was the rider of the motorcycle, while Lewis was injured.
The 21-year-old resident of Drysdale Street, Charlestown told this publication that her left knee was broken and the lower part of that same leg was fractured. She said she was told the surgery will be done today or before the end of the week.
According to Lewis, she had left her workplace in Alberttown sometime after 1 am and was heading home on Fraser’s motorcycle along Albert Street. She said the car which hit them came from the west on Regent Street, as Fraser was attempting to turn west into Regent Street. Lewis said Fraser tried to stop, but it was too late. The car collided with them, then swerved and ended up slamming into a utility pole at the corner of Regent and Albert streets.
Lewis added that she then noticed a vehicle approaching Fraser, who was sprawled in the middle of Regent Street. She said she tried to wave her hand to the oncoming bus, but that went unnoticed, and the bus ran over Fraser, pitching him further on Regent Street. Fraser was pronounced dead on arrival, while Lewis was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Police Force’s Public Relations Officer Ivelaw Whittaker told Stabroek News that the drivers of the bus and car involved in the accident are in police custody assisting with the investigation which is ongoing.
