A man who was allegedly caught with more than 200 grammes of cannabis during a routine police patrol at Mahdia was yesterday remanded to prison when he made his first appearance in court.
Kevin Abrams, 20, of Kato Village, Region 8 pleaded not guilty when his charge of possessing 236 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking was read to him. According to police Prosecutor Michael Grant, police ranks were in Campbell Town, Mahdia on January 27 around 15:30hrs when they observed Abrams walking with a haversack. His behaviour, it was said, was very suspicious and prompted the officers to search him. During the search, 6 plastic bags, each containing seeds, leaves and stems suspected to be cannabis, were discovered. A field test was conducted and the substance tested positive as cannabis. The young man was told of the offence and arrested.
No objections were raised to bail. However, Abrams was remanded nonetheless by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. He will make his second appearance on April 14 at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
