GBTI warns about `Phishing’

The Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry today warned about an upsurge in fake messages on the internet purporting to come from the bank and asking for information.

So-called Phishing is a scam through which an e-mail user is fooled into revealing personal or confidential information which the scammer can use illicitly. The bank warned customers in an advertisement today not to click on any links within such emails.

It said that “GBTI will never send you emails, or make unsolicited telephone calls, requesting your online password, access codes or other sensitive data”. It said that customers must first log on to its website www.gbtibank.com before signing on to the bank’s direct banking service.

Customers with queries can call the bank’s card centre on 231-4391/3.
