Golden Jaguars Intern-ational and Slingerz FC midfielder Vurlon Mills said that although the departure of mercurial winger Dwain Jacobs to arch-rivals Alpha ‘the Hammer’ United was shocking, it will not weaken the Vergenoegen giants.
“He was the main player in the start line-up but his move did not weaken Slingerz in any way. His absence just gives one of the younger players an opportunity to shine now,” Mills said, in an interview with Stabroek Sport.
Questioned about the possible reasons for Jacobs’s unexpected move, the former Fruta Conquerors stalwart said, “If you look at the bigger picture, he probably wanted to play in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championships which is a better opportunity to market yourself.” However, Mills said he has not spoken
to Jacobs since his departure.
“He made his decision and I give him all the support. I hope he took with him the leadership, discipline and professionalism and that he would be an asset to the coach and more so to the club,” he said.
Questioned about the locker room reaction on hearing that Jacobs had left, Mills said, “It was a surprise to the team that he was leaving because he was the captain and everyone wanted to know what his real reasons was for him leaving.”
Asked if the management of the West Demerara unit should have tried to persuade him to stay, Mills said each player must make his own decisions.
“I think each player have their choice of who they want to play for. On management behalf I don’t know if they made any efforts to try and persuade for him to stay,” he said. “I think if a player is more comfortable to play with another club, he should be allowed the opportunity.”
