Hassan Mohamed will team up with the National Sports Commission (NSC) to continue his 2014 cycling calendar with back-to-back events today and tomorrow.
Today, the NSC will sponsor an 11-race programme around the inner circuit of the National Park from 09:00hrs while tomorrow they will stage a 40-mile road race on the open West Demerara road.
The feature race of the National Park event will be the customary 35-lap schoolboys and invitational
event which will be contested by the top junior and senior riders. Other races carded for today include the BMX age group categories, veterans, uprights and mountain bikes.
Last year’s most successful cyclist, Alanzo Greaves is the defending champion of the event. Greaves, who won 22 races in 2013, took the top honours in last year’s race in one hour, 18 minutes and 15 seconds. Other category winners were Raul Leal (Juniors and Juveniles), Kenneth Meije (Veteran Over-50) and Stepano Husbands (Mountain Bikers).
Tomorrow’s race will start at the Demerara Harbour Bridge, proceed to Bushy Park, Parika and finish at the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
The veterans, uprights and female riders will turn back at the Uitvlugt ground on the upward journey and finish at the Harbour Bridge.
Starting time is 08:00hrs.
Warren ‘40’ McKay is the defending champion of the senior race, having won last year’s race in one hour, 40 minutes and 36 seconds. Leal also won the Junior category last year.
Junior Niles (Veterans Open) and Naomi Singh (Female) are the defending champions of the other categories.
Notes: The two races are part of the annual cycling programme for Mashramani. Director of Sport, Neil Kumar will distribute the prizes to the top performers.
