A teenager was on Friday placed on $80,000 bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, after pleading not guilty to a simple larceny charge.
Ganesh Lookcharan, 19, of 788 Belle West Housing Scheme, West Bank of Demerara was accused of stealing $81,000 worth of items from the car of Mark Adonis between January 16 and the following day.
According to Prosecutor Michael Grant, Adonis is the owner of a Toyota Premio car which he would usually park in Cummings Street, outside of his yard due to insufficient space. On January 16 at about 11.30 pm, the virtual complainant (VC) parked his vehicle on his bridge in front of his yard, leaving everything intact and the car secured. He went to bed shortly afterwards.
Grant continued that, about 3.45 am the following day, the VC was awoken by his father’s shouting. The VC’s father was yelling at someone out of a window. Upon checking, Adonis saw no one. However, he later discovered several items missing from his car. These items included two rearview mirrors, a motor system, and a car antennae. The matter was reported to the police and, following investigations, the accused was arrested and charged.
In applying for bail for the defendant, attorney-at-law Melville Duke stated that his client, who worked at a family-owned wash bay, had no prior convictions and had not been found with any of the stolen items in his possession.
Duke further added that, at the time of the incident, the accused had been at the Wales police station.
After no objections to bail were raised by the prosecutor, Lookcharan was granted bail and has to return to court on February 26 for statements.
