The Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) is looking to resume its winning ways in this year’s Inter-County U15 cricket competitions.
The BCB’s U15 representatives teams made a clean sweep of the limited overs and two-day competitions in 2010 and 2011 but did not participate in the competitions the following two years because of issues with the cricket boards, BCB coach Julian Moore told Stabroek Sport.
“We are very mindful that it is a tournament we haven’t won in two years and we need to correct
that this year by getting on the ball early and getting the players fine-tuned,” Moore said.
This has resulted in the BCB staging an Under-15 preparatory camp (which is ongoing) and which will be used as a yardstick to select the best possible crop of players to represent the Ancient County in this year’s U-15 inter-county tournaments.
Speaking with this newspaper Moore said that the camp targets the length and breadth of Berbice and that the players will be taught the basics of batting bowling, fielding and wicket-keeping along with physical training to aid the young players in their game.
He added that despite the fact that most of the players were new to this level, the players are very receptive and show a willingness to learn from the sessions.
The weather, which continues to interfere with outdoor activities, prevented the players from indulging in game simulations but Moore said he hoped that the weather will ease up so that he will be able to give the players the actual outdoor time they need.
The former youth player also explained that he will not only be focusing solely on the on-field aspect but topics such as; captaincy, field positions and the importance of teamwork will be dealt with.
Nearly 30 players from the East Bank/New Amsterdam/ Canje zone attended Tuesday’s first session while other areas such as Cumberland, Rose Hall Welfare and Berbice High School are expected to participate as well.
The programme is geared specifically towards preparing the zone team for the upcoming NCN U15 Inter-Zone two-day competition from which players will be selected to represent Berbice in the 2014 Limacol U-15 Inter-County competitions.
