Dellon Hutson, who was remanded to prison on a drug trafficking charge, was shot during a confrontation with a police rank during a raid at his house but still managed to escape, a court heard yesterday.
Hutson, 38, of 36 Hadfield Street, Lodge, pleaded not guilty to a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, which was read by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
According to the police report presented to the court by Police Prosecutor Adduni Inniss, on January 28, at 10:00 hrs, police ranks attached to the Narcotics Branch went to Huston’s home in search of narcotics. Upon their arrival, Inniss said, Hutson was seen by a rank in the yard with a bag. The rank, she added, approached Hutson, who drew a pair of scissors from his bag. This action, she further said, caused the rank to react in fear by discharging a single round, which hit Hutson on his left leg. The court was told that at that point Hutson dropped his bag and ran. The rank then picked up the bag, which contained seeds, leaves and stems that were later confirmed to be cannabis, and amounted to 58 grammes.
The court was also told that Hutson subsequently surrendered to the police at Narcotics Branch, Eve Leary, in the presence of his lawyer, Glenn Hanoman.
Hanoman, however, told Magistrate Azore that the situation stemmed from a contention between Hutson and an unnamed woman. Hanoman further alleged that over $700,000 worth of raw gold was taken by the police from Huston’s home on the day in question. Hutson was never allowed to sign for the gold as his property, Hanoman said.
Hanoman also made a bail application, however, it was refused. Magistrate Azore said Hutson would be remanded, explaining that no special reason was given pertaining to the charge. The case was adjourned until February 20.
