Foreign Affairs Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett has ordered a full investigation of the Guyana Consulate in Boa Vista, Brazil after receiving a letter citing various irregularities involving property and assets.
While Rodrigues-Birkett did not disclose exactly what the irregularities were, she did say, “I received a letter that indicated some things that I think we needed to check… There were some specific things in the letter that required yes or no answers and we didn’t get straightforward answers in the original interrogation.”
Leila King has been the head of the mission in Boa Vista for four years. Stabroek News tried to reach King for a comment, however up to press time was unable to do so.
Responding to questions at a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday, the minister said there were various issues that made her decide that a further investigation may be necessary. She affirmed that at least one of the allegations turned out to be true and confirmed that misappropriation of consulate property and assets did occur.
She said she did not want to comment further until the investigation was fully completed, but that on completion of the investigation necessary action will be taken.
