With three convictions already behind him, Mark Singh yesterday earned himself a fourth stint in prison after pleading guilty to threatening to kill his wife.
Singh was charged with using threatening language towards Sajitia Persaud, on February 1, at their lot 150 Regent Street home.
It was the police’s case that on February 1, at about 18:00hrs, Persaud went into her home to collect her son’s uniform to wash. Singh then came out of his bedroom and shared words with the woman, leading to a misunderstanding between the two. During the misunderstanding, the man threatened to chop off Persaud’s neck.
Afraid for her life, Persaud ran out and relayed the message to her aunt, who subsequently made a report at the Alberttown Police Station. During his arrest, Singh further threatened Persaud, stating that if he were to be released from prison he would “finish her”.
During his initial appearance in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1 before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, the man claimed that he had been inebriated and could not remember threatening the woman. After his explanation, Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry recorded a not guilty plea. However, the man, after hearing the updated plea, changed his statement and said that he had definitely threatened his wife. He then insisted on a sentence.
The matter was, however, transferred to Court 10, where he maintained his guilty plea in front of Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond. After hearing the facts and the man’s admission of guilt, Magistrate Chandan-Edmond sentenced Singh to three months imprisonment in the Camp Street Prison.
Persaud and Singh have had similar matters in court before. Their most recent case was on January 31. However, though Persaud had attended court for that matter, Singh had failed to show up. He later returned home and allegedly used abusive language towards her.
