The culmination of Mayor Hamilton Green 79th birth anniversary ‒ 7-a-side inter-ward knockout competition, took place on Sunday, January 26 at the Den Amstel Community Centre Ground, with a doubleheader. In the feature match homeside Den Amstel engaged North East La Penitence in the final, preceded by a Junior Mayor’s All Stars X1 opposing Young Achievers in a supposedly friendly-exhibition match. Editor, it must be noted that Young Achievers is an affiliate of the West Demerara Football Associa-tion (WDFA), which is affiliated to the Guyana Football Federation. Was approval sought by the club from the WDFA to participate in the match?
In addition, the players from the All-Stars X1 come from various clubs in different associations. Were the respective association executives informed in writing? As a consequence, it would be interesting to know how the GFF would view this development, especially when it is taken into consideration that the imposition of a levy fee was overlooked in defiance of the constitutional requirement that gate/entrance fees should be collected at the venue.
Finally, while the points outlined in the preceding paragraph must not be construed as an attack on the competition or the organizer, from a layman’s perspective it is in the public’s interest to know how the GFF executive would react in relation to upholding constitutionality, natural justice and promoting fair play in this specific instance. Or would a blind eye be turned?
