The African Cultural & Development Association (ACDA) yesterday launch-ed its African History Month programme to commemorate Black History Month and this year’s celebrations will see an emphasis on the involvement of young people.
At the launching at the association’s Thomas Lands AKWAABA Centre, ACDA member Aisha Haynes revealed a number of activities scheduled for the rest of the month.
The activities include lectures from local and international speakers and amonth-long exhibition at the headquarters.
The exhibit, titled “The Sankofa Exhibit,” centres around the Sankofa bird, which flies forward while looking backward. The exhibit aims to link the past and the present by showcasing life on the plantation, slave rebellions and subsequent emancipation along with the history of Africa, the motherland of the world/cradle of the world.
According to Haynes, invitations have been sent to 13 schools. These schools, she said, are already registered to partake in the lecture series, films broadcasts and tutorials on performing tasks such as head-wrapping.
Though only secondary schools have been registered so far to view the exhibition, primary school students will have the opportunity to partake in the month’s activities on February 21, which has been slated as “African Culture Day.” This event will see the full participation of the students in exhibitions and cultural presentations.
A youth entrepreneurship conference, aimed at bringing together local youth groups with international organisations, is also on the association’s agenda. This conference is slated for February 15 and will feature six international and local institutions.
The “Sankofa Exhibit” is available for viewing for the rest of the month and is opened from Mondays to Fridays between 10 AM and 4 PM and on Saturdays between 10 AM and 2 PM. Admission is free.
