Autopsies performed on the two fishermen who were found entangled in a seine at De Kinderen, West Coast Demerara, on Monday revealed that the men died as result of asphyxiation due to drowning.
This was a disclosed by Nandkumar Bhagwandat, who witnessed the post-mortem examination performed on the body of his father, Sahadeo Bhagwandat, yesterday. He said the relatives of Ramdeo Sijogie were also present and they confirmed that Sijogie had died of drowning. Bhagwandat also said that his father sustained an injury to his head.
The bodies of Sahadeo Bhagwandat, 47, of Lot 8 Railway View, Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara and Ramdeo Sijogie, 46, of Lot 188 West Meten-Meer-Zorg were discovered two days after going missing.
Bhagwandat’s wife had said that he left home on Saturday morning drunk with Sijogie to check their nets at a canal in De Kinderen but never returned. Two days of searching ended with the gruesome discovery.
A man who was working at the koker that morning had reportedly told the men to leave since the water was rough.
Bhagwandat will be cremated today.
