Mayor Hamilton Green says the council does not have full details on the crematorium being built at Le Repentir Cemetery and expressed concern that it is being built in an “unpropitious environment.”
“We don’t have the full details. We assume that the Engineer’s Department has that…,” Green told reporters yesterday.
While the project is a private one, the council had given its approval last year and Deputy Mayor Patricia Chase-Green was quoted as saying that the council will not be responsible for the maintenance of the crematorium.
Green informed that last year $17 million was allocated for the rehabilitation of the cemetery but the council was only able to mobilise $1 million to carry out its work.
“You don’t put a budget of $17 million to do a cemetery… unless the government allows us to broaden our revenue base which they haven’t since 1994,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Head of the Cemetery Committee Ranwell Jordan said he was still to get from the Town Clerk, the full details pertaining to the crematorium. He is still to visit the site of the facility.
