The Ministry of Home Affairs in its monthly report on the operations of its Stray Catching Units said that the units impounded a total of 413 animals during the month of January 2014, in its continued efforts to enhance road safety.
A release from the ministry said that the Georgetown and Berbice stray catching units targeted the East Bank, East Coast, West Bank and West Coast Demerara; and the West Bank Berbice and Corentyne areas.
Of the total number of animals impounded, the release said that 208 cows headed the list, followed by 94 sheep, 89 goats and 22 horses.
The ministry said that during the month it received several complaints of cattle โdestroying kitchen gardens, digging up pipes, breaking fences, upturning garbage containers, attacking small children, aggravating dogs, and destroying sea defences especially on the East Bank of Demerara.โ
The Ministry again appealed to animal owners to exercise proper supervision of their animals during their grazing period in order to enhance the welfare, wellbeing and safety of persons and properties.
