A 19-year-old Corentyne man was yesterday slapped with six robbery under arms charges when he appeared in the Whim Magistrate’s Court and was remanded to prison.
Kishan Hemnauth of Lot 160 Section ‘B’, Number 65 Village appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh but was not required to plead.
The charges read that Hemnauth while in the company of others and armed with guns, knives and cutlasses on December 30 last, robbed Chinese national Zhuoxing Su, Chandee Jagdeo and Kemrai Dindiyal, all of Number 56 Village.
Su was robbed of one laptop computer valued $120,000, one iPhone $200,000 and $92,000.
Jagdeo was robbed of a cellular phone worth $10,000 $62,000 in phone cards and $35,000.
Dindiyal was robbed a cellular phone valued $40,000.
Additionally, it stated that on January 24, at Number 47 Village, the accused robbed Dhanrajie Seenauth of $270,000 and Mark Fernandes one of a silver chain worth $4,000 a silver ring valued at $6,000 and a silver hand band valued $2,500.
The court was also told that on January 26, at Number 48 Village, the accused stole from Vimlawatie Ramdeen $32,000, a pair of gold bangles valued $18,000, two gold rings valued $40,000, a gold chain valued $20,000 and a gold ring worth $10,000.
Police Prosecutor Corporal Althea Solomon objected to bail after an application was made by Hemnauth’s Attorney Charrandass Persaud.
Persaud told the court that his client was picked up at his home and he was not found at any of the crime scenes. He suggested that the police acted on hearsay. He also stated that Hemnauth claimed he was brutalised by police. He added that his client was transferred on the day of his arrest (Thursday last) to the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam. Persaud alleged too that Hemnauth was also placed in the Reliance Police Station lockups for some time and after some time he was taken to the backlands of Guyana where lawmen submerged him into a canal and requested that he sign several documents.
Further, Persaud questioned among other things how his client could have robbed residents armed with all the weapons mentioned in the charges. During his argument he made it known that the client was a first time accused.
Responding, Solomon objected to bail based on the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence. She said lawmen are investigating matters of similar nature in which the accused is a suspect and charges are likely to be laid soon. Solomon also said that a firearm allegedly used to commit the offences was recovered.
Hemnauth was refused bail and the matter is transferred to the Number 51 Magistrate Court for hearing tomorrow.
