Police have charged two Station Street, Kitty residents with operating unlicensed liquor bars from their homes after raids on Wednesday.
Bibi Sattaur, 30, was arrested and charged with selling spirituous liquor without a licence and conducting an unlicensed business following the raid on her “Liquid Love” bar, which was being operated from the bottom flat of her home.
She was eventually released on self-bail after denying the charge when she appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday.
According to Prosecutor Michael Grant, police officers went to the woman’s Lot 12 Station Street, Kitty address on February 12 to conduct a raid.
Over 23 cases of alcohol were confiscated, including cases of Guinness, Stag, Corona and Banks brand beers.
Grant added that the woman was asked to produce her liquor licence. Though she did, the licence had expired.
The businesswoman was released on her own recognisance and was ordered to return to court on February 26 for police reports.
Meanwhile, Ravindra Samaroo, of Lot 52 Station Street, Kitty, was also was brought before the Chief Magistrate on similar charges.
Though the particulars of the charge against him was the same as that of Sattaur, Samaroo elected to plead guilty to the charges.
According to Prosecutor Grant, the raid conducted on Samaroo’s business, which he was also operating from the bottom flat of his home, uncovered over 130 bottles of varying beers.
Samaroo, 47, will appear today in court for sentencing.
