A Lodge man, accused of robbing a Chinese national of $250,000 in cash and kind and attempting to rob another, was refused bail yesterday.
It is alleged that on February 17, at Georgetown, Raheem Benn, together with others, robbed Zhuang Hong Ling, of two Chinese Passports, US$250, 1520 Yuan, $10,000, among other items, which amounted to $250,000 in total value.
It was also alleged that Benn, armed with a knife, attempted to rob Ling’s husband, Deng Choo Xu, on the same day at Princes Street.
Police Prosecutor Michael Grant told the court that Ling and Xu were walking east along Princes Street, at 6am, when Benn pulled out a knife and robbed Ling. A security guard in the area, who witnessed the attack, according to Grant, discharged a round, causing Benn to abscond with the mentioned articles. Benn, however, was arrested and later identified by the security guard and Xu.
Benn, 19, of Lot 43 Lodge Hous-ing Scheme, was represented by attorney Paul Fung-a-Fat, whose attempt to secure bail failed.
He was subsequently remanded after Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry accepted Grant’s objections, including the fact that Benn was previously charged with simple larceny.
The matters are scheduled to be called again on February 26.
