The lives of five ailing residents of Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice and other communities were made easier when the Rotary Club of New Amsterdam (RCNA) presented them with wheelchairs.
The presentation was done last Wednesday through the Bush Lot United Sports Club (BLUSC).
Two persons, Bhagwat Mangru and Padminie Mahase who are both visually impaired showed up during the simple ceremony to uplift their chairs.
The emotional residents who were finding it hard to move around their homes said life would be easier for them now and that they would be more independent. They expressed gratitude to both clubs for the gesture.
President of the BLUSC, Robby Saywack thanked the president of the Rotary Club, Rajendra Rajkumar and members of the Board of Directors for responding to the needs of the people and for making the chairs available.
Saywack and other members of the BLUSC took the remaining chairs to the homes of the other residents.
He said the club undertook the initiative after visiting ‘shut-ins’ during a relief effort on New Year’s Day and realized how much the wheelchairs were needed.
According to him, “We cannot only be doing cricket and cricket administration and working with the youngsters, we need to put some emphasis on looking after the elderly folks in the community…”
Rajkumar said he was happy that the RCNA was able to reach out to the residents and help to change their lives.
The wheelchair programme, he said, was initiated by the Georgetown Rotary Club and RCNA together with the Rotary E- Club of the world that would reach out to persons in need.
The president said too that for the past five years the club has donated over 250 wheelchairs.
