A man accused of stealing a $3,000 bed sheet was placed on $25,000 bail after denying the offence yesterday in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Fifty-one year old Jason Letlow, of 58 Howes Street, was accused of stealing the sheet from the Fabric World Store on Regent Street on February 18. He pleaded not guilty to the charge when Magistrate Faith McGusty read it to him.
According to Prosecutor Seon Blackman, Letlow went into the store between 11am and 11:30am, picked up the bed sheet and placed it in a black plastic bag. He then attempted to walk out of the store. However, public-spirited citizens on the pavement who had witnessed him committing the crime apprehended him, the prosecutor said.
However, Letlow offered a different tale. According to him, he had gone into the store to purchase a hat when a woman approached him and accused him of stealing a number of items, including a number of hats and a bed sheet set. He further added that he had not left the store and was therefore confused as to how he could be charged with stealing something despite never having left the store.
Prosecutor Blackman objected to bail, stating that the defendant was deliberately trying to mislead the court.
Nevertheless, the father of three was granted $25,000 bail on the condition that he report to the Ruimveldt Police Station every Monday and Friday at 9am. He will make his next court appearance on February 26.
