A Cuban doctor was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the New Amsterdam Hospital (NAH) yesterday after she was physically abused by her husband who later ingested a poisonous substance.
The man, Victor Yearwood, 37, is also a patient at the NAH under guard. Reports are that he was in a habit of abusing the doctor, Iliana Pacron, 43, and had been arrested and charged before.
The man who also works at the NAH as a pharmacist had also been placed on remand and has a matter pending in court.
He reportedly dropped his wife off at the hospital and left hurriedly. Medical personnel became suspicious after seeing the marks of violence about the woman’s body and called the police. They checked his home at Savannah Park, NA but could not find him.
The man, in the meantime, apparently “thought she would die” and drove
to a bushy area at Bell Vue, East Bank Berbice.
Sources believe that the man ingested the gramoxone before reaching the area. They were unable to locate the poison bottle. They told this newspaper that he stopped the car and went into the bushes where he collapsed.
Police received a report about one hour later that a “white car with blood” – said to be from the woman’s injuries – was
seen in the area. When they got to the scene the officers realized that it belonged to the man.
They hunted among the bushes but could not find him. They were about to abandon the search when the man started to scream out in pain and they took him to the hospital.
According to a police source, the doctor had made about five domestic violence reports against her husband but she would then beg for the matters to be dropped. Eventually, the police decided to ignore her and institute the charge.
