Shortly after leaving a city bank, an East Bank of Demerara resident was around mid-morning shot twice and his wife robbed of some of the monies they had withdrawn from the bank.
“We pulled up in the car across from GT&T (the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company Church Street Branch) and I feel something cold to my neck and the man with the gun pull my bag saying same time ‘Give me that bag’ … my husband look over and see the gun and shout out and he move the gun from me and he shoot he two times,” Tina Ramesh told Stabroek News.
Her husband Sunil Ramesh, aged 37, was hit once to his shoulder and once to his abdomen and was being medically attended to, at a private city hospital, when Stabroek News visited. His medical condition was listed as stable.
The female Ramesh said that she believes that they were trailed from the bank to the Church Street area where they were robbed as the robber on a CG motorcycle didn’t wait for her husband to properly park before they made their move. She also noted that the men demanded her handbag that contained the monies and documents.
She explained that she and husband were on their way to the GT&T office to query a $50,000 plus bill that they had received and had made provision to pay off the amounts as they needed their landline functional. She said that only $200,000 was in the bag as they had already separated monies for other bills before arriving at GT&T. However although she lamented that her phone will be disconnected and that her documents were gone she was grateful her husband was alive.
The woman also decried the unwillingness of the public to assist. She said that when she saw her husband wounded she began screaming for help but no one came to their aid. Shortly after two women came to help but none of them could drive so her husband then decided to drive himself to the nearest hospital.
Police arrived shortly after and took statements from the couple and nearby eyewitness.
