The Frank Watson Memorial U14 and U16 football tournaments will get underway today at the Tucville ground.
The tournaments are being held in memory of Watson, the first president of Pele FC who died at Kamarang in a plane crash in 1973 recalls Lennox Arthur, one of the founder members of the club.
According to Arthur the Pele Alumni of New York is staging the tournament and will present trophies and 20 gold medallions to the two inning teams with the runners up receiving trophies and 20 silver medallions.
Each participating team will receive two footballs while the tournaments MVP’s will receive a pair of Golden Boots each.
Arthur said there will also be prizes for the Best Defensive Player and the Best Goalkeeper.
Speaking of Watson Arthur said: “He never lived to see a Pele team compete in the first division,” he lamented.
There will be four U14 matches today with Grove Hi Tech opposing Beacons at 9am; Western Tigers vs playing Eagles at 9.30am; Conquerors opposing Black Pearl at 10am and Riddim Squad playing Den Amstel at 10.30am.
In the U16 competition Grove Hi tech will oppose GFC; Eagles will play Renaissance; Conquerors will oppose Den Amstel and Pele will play Riddim Squad.
Matches will continue on Monday at the Den Amstel Ground from noon with Lodge playing Wortmanville and Wales coming up against North Sophia.
Other matches billed for Monday are: De Kindren versus South Sophia; Leopold St/Berlin versus Crane; Poudroyen against Mocha; Kuru Kuru versus North East; Goed Fortuin against Meadowbrook and Den Amstel against Grove.
The final will take place on February 27.
Arthur said there will also be a clash between the All Star Under-14 team and the All Star Under-16 team.
