Tillandsia commonly called Air plants are epiphytic and come from the Bromeliacea family.
Tillandsia originates from South and Central America mainly in the rainforest and there are approximately 550 species. A small number of these – about 16 species – are native to Florida.
Tillandsia derive their nutrients from water and air through the leaf system. The roots are used like anchors to hold on to trees, wood bark or rocks. Tillandsia are wonderful and rewarding plants; their leaves often have amazing colours before the flowers bloom. These attractive flowers comes in shades of blue, purple, pink , golden yellow and red. The plants are divided into two groups – those which have grey leaves and those which have green. They flower once or twice per year, then they will start to produce young pups. Actually, your plant will look better the next year when it starts to grow in clumps. Flowers can last for several days to months, depending on the species.
Some popular varieties are T. ionantha, T. caput-medusae and Spanish moss.
This plant likes filtered sunlight or semi-shade. It should be watered twice weekly and misted on other days. It should be fertilized with Miracle Gro All Purpose Plant Food once every month.
Until next week, happy gardening and happy Mash!
