An East Coast Demerara woman was yesterday busted by the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit on an outgoing flight to the United States with over two kilograms of liquid cocaine disguised as Guyana rum.
Stabroek News understands that the alleged trafficker is a 24-year-old Plaisance resident who made several trips last year to the U.S. and had raised eyebrows as to the funding source of her travel as she is unemployed.
Head of CANU, James Singh confirmed the bust and praised the efforts of his agency’s workers along with the police and customs who have over time discovered the many ingenious ways traffickers have tried to smuggle the drug out of the country.
Because of its highly soluble nature and quick reversion to its original state, liquid cocaine smuggling is increasingly being used.
Some persons have even taken to immersing clothing in the liquid, drying it and retrieving it on arrival at the intended destination. However CANU is equipped with the necessary resources to detect the cocaine in liquid form and hidden in clothing.
