Den Amstel and Pouderoyen football clubs booked semi-finals spots in this year’s Slingerz Football Club organised Stag Beer/West Side Mashramani Champions Cup which kicked off Friday last at the Den Amstel Community Centre Ground.
In matches played at the West Demerara facility, Den Amstel, last year’s runners-up, drubbed Eagles 6 – 1 in the second game of the night’s double header after Pouderoyen FC had sealed a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Young Achievers in extra time in the opening match.
Delon Lanfarman in the fourth and 46th minutes and Jeffrey Pereira in the 25th and 60th minutes, netted doubles for Den Amstel who led 5 – 1 at half time while Travis Hilliman (12) and Andre Hector (14) were the other scorers for the eventual victors.
Eagle’s only goal came from Jain Williams who scored in the fifth minute to level the scores at 1 – 1 after Perreira’s opening goal.
Den Amstel will have to finish the tournament and probably the rest of the football season without their animated goalkeeper Sherwyn Lanfarman who suffered a broken leg when he collided with one of his teammates.
Earlier the Pouderoyen/ Young Achievers clash had set the tone for the night when the two teams with a statement to make on the ‘West Side’ met head-to-head.
After a scoreless first half with no opportunities being created by any of the sides, a thrilling second half was anticipated by the fans.
Fourteen minutes into the second half Nathan Allicock fired home a thunderous right footed shot from the top of the 18-yard area.
Pouderoyen, though, maintained composure, countering at every chance given before equalizing in the 70th minute.
Delon Josiah collected a pass while breaking away on the right wing and with a mishap in the young Achievers defence along with poor goal keeping, the player was able to calmly tuck the ball into the net.
Apart from the two goals, the match never really had a bright moment but it took literally, the last second to decide a winner.
Regulation had gone and the two sides were in a heated battle in extra time when Phillip Moore’s header made him the hero of the night and confirmed Pouderoyen’s team’s clash with Dem Amstel in the semifinals.
