A 74-year-old woman of Queen St. No 79 Village, Corriverton was on Thursday remanded to prison on a drug charge shortly after a dramatic arrest was made at her home by five male officers.
The court heard that on February 20, Evelyn White had in her possession 61 grammes of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking.
She pleaded not guilty to the offence when she appeared before Magistrate Sherdell Isaacs at the New Amsterdam Court.
Residents had told this newspaper that five male police officers from the Springlands Station visited the woman’s home around 7:30 am.
They recalled that they saw when the ranks arrested the woman and her wrap dress was torn off her body in the process.
They had said too that the woman was sitting on the street with only her underwear and the officers with guns were around her.
They also provided a picture to this newspaper to support their claim.
The residents became angry and loudly condemned the actions of the police. By then the police had called for a female officer and after some time one arrived in plain clothes.
A senior officer had told this newspaper that they received a report and searched the woman’s house. He said after the drugs were found the woman tried to jump through the window.
He said too that because of that they had to use some form of restraint.
