A last ball six by Sean Paul guaranteed Wales’ Primary a spot in the Demerara district final after they tied with West Coast zone champions Cornelia Ida in the final of the West Demerara Scotiabank/Guyana Cricket Board Kiddy Cricket Festival at Wales ground yesterday.
The game involved 20 energetic and determined students that utilized what their coaches taught them in search of victory. Batting first Cornelia Ida Primary School made 136-4 from 10 overs.
Bowling for Wales, Jamal Bramdeo and captain Paul took two wickets each.
Wales in reply needed nine runs off the last over without losing a wicket. The first four balls were dot balls, with the fifth ball being a wide, thus awarding Wales two runs. Seven runs were required off the final delivery with skipper Sean Paul facing up, a full pitch ball was hit over the square leg boundary to level the score, sparking much celebration by the Wales students and staff members.
Wales ended their innings at 136-6, with Paul top scoring with his unbeaten nine. Kumal and Ricardo Panaram were the chief wicket takers with two wickets each. Both teams will now await the conclusion of the other district vying for a place in the Demerara finals.
Earlier in the West Bank zone final, Wales outplayed Vreed-en-Hoop Primary by 31 runs. Vreed-en-Hoop, sent into bat made 102 all out from their 10 overs.
Christopher Singh and Tiffany Douglas took 2-7 and 3-8 respectively for Wales, who in reply managed 133-7 at the end of their 10 overs. Shawn Patterson took 2 wickets to take his wicket tally to nine from three games.
