For the second year, Suriname’s Guyana-based Insurance Company Assuria, will sponsor a three-category, top-four singles tournament to be held later this month.
The second Assuria Insurance Invitational Classic, was launched on Thursday by the Guyana Tennis Association,
at the insurance company’s Church Street location.
Armand Achaibersing, Director of Assuria said that the company has been a part of the community for two years and was pleased to give back to the community by supporting activities.
“I hope that a lot of young people would be involved to benefit from this experience,” he opined.
Grace Mc Calman the GTA’s first vice president, thanked Assuria, noting that the association has worked very hard to make tennis affordable in Guyana, along with getting more people involved in the sport.
Le Ressouvenir Tennis Club is the venue for the tournament which will be held over three weekends from Thursdays to Sundays.
The competition which started yesterday, will end on March 16.
The tournament will feature top female players Carol Humphrey, Nicola Ramdyhan, Afruica Gentle and Jamaali Homer in the women’s singles; Anthony Downes, Leyland Leacock, Gavin Lewis and Daniel Lopes in the men’s singles and Godfrey Lowden, Carlos Adams, Harry Panday and Rudy Grant in the Over 35 men’s singles.
The competition was started last year by the Suriname insurance company under the then management of Dick Wesenhagen, a tennis player, who made a commitment to sponsor annually this special tournament for the top four players in each of the main singles categories – Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles and Men’s Over-35 Singles. The four players in each category will compete against each other in the round robin format.
