Dear Editor,
The Caribbean Press is not a failure, as stated by Ruel Johnson in his newest letter in the Stabroek News February 28 edition (‘The Caribbean Press is an example of the urgent need to audit public projects’). The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport would like to highlight that the new books referred to by Mr Johnson – Twenty-Five Poems by Guyanese Children Vol. 1 and Anthology of Contemporary Guyanese Verse – were recently delivered to the Ministry.
Further, the Ministry will be announcing the launch of the new books soon. The addition of these two books brings the total production from the Caribbean Press to sixty-eight books.
The Anthology of Contemporary Guyanese Verse which is edited by Petamber Persaud includes the work of twenty-one poets and provides readers with a new look at Guyanese identity from a twenty-first century perspective. It also examines universal themes such as the complexities of human relationships and the exploration of race and ethnicity.
Meanwhile the Twenty-Five Poems by Guyanese Children Vol. 1 edited by Rev Gideon Cecil, is a wonderful collection of poems written by talented Guyanese school-age children.
It is anticipated that the production of these two books would encourage more Guyanese to express themselves through the written art form.
Yours faithfully,
Tekia E Hanover
