A Ruimzight carpenter is now in jail following the alleged discovery of over one kilogramme of canna-bis on him at Port Kaituma, North West District.
Rajendra Lichand denied the police’s allegation that he had in his possession 1.35 kg of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking on February 28. However, without any special reason for bail, he was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 1.
According to Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru, Lichand was stopped and searched by police in the area, while he was one of a four-member motorcycle group. Mangru said what appeared to be cannabis was found in a haversack Lichand had strapped on his back. He added that Lichand orally admitted to the possession and was arrested and slapped with the drug trafficking charge.
The next hearing in the case is due on May 6 at the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
